7,000 students in over 80 Irish schools now using Wriggle ‘digital’ schoolbags

Limerick, Ireland. 2nd September 2014: 85 Transition Year students at Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh today received their new ‘digital’ schoolbags as they prepare to join the Wriggle 1:1 mobile learning programme. 240 students at the school will now be using mobile devices and digital textbooks in place of traditional textbooks. Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh is one of 80 schools throughout Ireland participating in the Wriggle programme this coming academic year.

Principal Donncha Ó Treasaigh commented: “Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh works tirelessly each and every year to enhance and improve its education service provision to pupils and parents of the College. Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh was one of the first schools in Ireland to adopt the use of iPad, commencing in 2010 with the use of iPad in Transition Year. The college is recognised nationally as one of the leaders in quality ICT integration and enrichment of teaching and learning. Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh was chosen to launch the Department of Education and Skills to launch the Digital Strategy for Schools 3rd December 2013. The College boasts three Apple Professional Development Consultants and I believe that Continuous Professional Development of teachers in the use of mobile technology is essential in maximising the potential for learning in the classroom. The use of iPad has certainly helped to improve pupil academic achievement which was highlighted from the schools Leaving Certificate results of 2014.“

Established in 2012, Wriggle is a 1:1 mobile learning initiative that transforms the teaching and learning environment in schools by putting new technology and engaging content into the hands of every student. Wriggle has created a complete package to provide each school with everything they need to make the move to digital textbooks on mobile devices, catering for both students and teachers. Wriggle provides the mobile devices; access to digital textbooks and interactive content; professional development for teachers; comprehensive support and expert advice on ICT planning for schools.

Beryl Furlong, Director of Education at Wriggle commented: “The response to Wriggle continues to be very positive as we prepare to work with over 7,000 students this year. We live in a digital age and school leaders, teachers and parents are quickly realising the benefits of integrating technology into teaching and learning. It is particularly important now in light of the new JCSA curriculum which will place significant emphasis on digital technology.”

Furlong continued: “The advantages are numerous – interactive, up to date content to engage students and increase attainment; the ability to cater to different learning styles and rates of progression; it allows for greater collaboration; instant feedback and fosters important life skills, not to mention the schoolbags are a lot lighter! Essentially 1:1 mobile learning allows students to acquire and develop what have become essential skills for the modern workplace and community.”
