Active Schools Flag

Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh is striving to obtain the Active Schools Flag and we are currently initiating the process. We have formed a commitee that comsists of teachers, non teaching staff, management, parents and members of the outside school community. We will be running “Active Schools Week” from 19th-24th April. During this week activites will be available for students, parents and staff. We will be encouraging the whole school community to get active.

The Active School Flag will be awarded to schools that:

  • Adhere to DES guidelines regarding PE timetable provision for all students.
  • Teach a broad and balanced PE curriculum.
  • Inform and invite the whole school community to participate in the ASF process.
  • Self-evaluate current provision in terms of PE, Physical Activity and Partnerships.
  • Plan, implement and monitor improvements for each of the aforementioned areas.
  • Organise an ‘Active School Week’ as part of the annual school calendar.

Run With Ray 2014

Ghlac cúigear dhalta dhéag ó Ghaelcholáiste Luimnigh páirt sa rith ‘Run with Ray’ a bhí ar siùl i gcathair Luimnigh ar an 17 Meán Fómhair. Bhí atmaisféar iontach timpeall Clancy’s Strand agus  bhí an ghrian ag spalpadh anuas ar an slua a bhí bailithe. Bhí na daltaí sásta an Ghaeilge a spreagadh i measc an slua agus bhí Pat Shortt, Bressie agus Ray Darcy an-sásta cúpla focail a labhairt leo.

World Marathon Day

On the 30th of September thirty students from first year went to UL to take part in World Marathon Day. Each student had to run seven laps of the running track. When we started running it was fine, but near the end it was very tiring. Five people from my class went. At the start of the race we performed well but we really had to motivate each other during the last few laps. each group had a different colour t-shirt and you had to keep track of your turn in the relay. While it was a very challenging experience it was very enjoyable and we really had to work as a team. I think everyone benefitted from it because we all had to work together and encourage each other on the running track. It was a little cold and rainy but it was a day out I really enjoyed.Ms Ní Shúilleabháin really helped us along and gave us some good tips on how to improve our running along with Liam Cantwell from Limerick City Sports Partnership.

The boys under 19s basketball team have progressed to the regional final again this year by beating Shannon Comp, Villiers and Abbeylough. We won two close matches against Villiers and Shannon Comp, narrowly beating both teams. the Abbey game was a different story on the other hand as we had the upper-hand for the most part of the game outscoring their  team in every quarter. one of our aspiring young talents is Emmet Browne, he is a key player to our squad. These last few years would not have been possible without the help and dedication of our fantastic coach Adrian Quaid. Adrian has help us over the past number of years and we appreciate his help and support. there are 14 players on our team, Emmet Browne, Ruairi Browne,Ryan Foley, Niall Foley, Mike McDonogh, Olly Deegan, Ben Walsh, Eoin Hegarty, Ben Ryan, Daniel Long, Ryan o Shaughnessy, Diarmuid Cadogan, Stephen Healy and Jeffrey Lane. An Idirbhliain / Transition Year

An iPad & iTunesU

Tá an iPad ag dul ó neart go neart anseo i nGaelcholáiste Luimnigh. Níl amhras ar bith ach go  gcuireann sé go mór leis an gcúrsa agus go dtugann sé spreagadh do na daltaí obair d’ard caighdeán a chur le chéile. Tá iTunesU in úsáid ag na múinteoirí i mbliana chun a gcuid nótaí agus acmhainní a roinnt leis na daltaí. Is suntasach an rud é go bhfuil bealach ann anois, nach gcaillóidh daltaí amach ar aon rud, más rud é go bhfuil sé/sí as láthair ón scoil.

The iPad & iTunesU

The use of the iPad is going from strength to strength here in Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh. There is no doubt that it adds significantly to the Transition Year course and inspires the students to produce a higher standard of work. Teachers have started using iTunesU in order to share their notes and resources with the students. It is very significant that students do not lose out on any course material or assignments if absent from school as all notes are ‘pushed’ onto their own individual iPad, via iTunesU.

Derg Isle Activity Centre

Thug daltaí na hIdirbhliana cuairt ar an ionad gníomhaíochta, Oileán Deirge ar chun taitneamh a  bhaint as na háiseanna agus scileanna oibre-bhuíne a fheabhsú.  Bhain na daltaí an-taitneamh agus tairbhe as an lá iontach spraoiúil seo.

TY pupils spent a day in Derg Isle Activity centre, enjoying the beautiful facilities and learning all about team-work and cooperation.  They enjoyed a fantastic range of activities on the day.

Obair Thréadchúraim

Téann gach dalta san Idirbhliain amach gach Déardaoin i gcomhair Obair Thréadchúraim ó a 09-13. This is great experience for us as we are gaining valuable experience while giving back to the community at the same time. Every week we are challenged with something different and everyone in Transition Year are enjoying it immensely.

An Comórtas Náisiúnta Treabhdóireachta

Ar an 24/09/14 chuaigh an bhliain ar fad chuig an Comórtas Náisiúnta Treabhdóireachta thuas i ‘Stradbally’, Contae Laoise. Shroich gach dalta an scoil timpeall leath uair tar éis a 7 ar maidin. D’fhág an bus an scoil timpeall a 8 a chlog. Bhí turas réasúnta fhada againn, timpeall 2 uair, ach bhí an – craic againn lenár gcairde ar fad. D’athraigh gach dalta isteach i bpéire “wellies” nó  butaisí – ar eagla go mbeadh sé fluich nó salach ann. Bhí a lán rudaí le feiceáil agus bhí a lán stallaí éagsúla timpeall na háite. Bhí daoine ag díoladh bia, caipín agus hataí, butaisí, bráisléidí agus an-chuid rudaí eile mar sin. Bhuail an bhlian ghrúpa suas lasmuigh den phubail RTÈ timpeall leath uair tar éis a dó. Chuamar ar ais ar an mbus agus shroicheamar an scoil arís timpeall a cúig a chlog. Bhí an lá againn!

The National Ploughing Championships

On the 24th of September the TY year group took a trip to the Ploughing Championships that were taking place in Stradbally, Co. Laois. Every student gathered outside the school from about half past six that morning and the bus departed just after seven. The bus journey was relatively long, lasting about 2 hours but everyone had good craic with their friends. Just before the bus pulled into the parking area at the Championships everyone quickly changed into their wellies – just in case the field happened to be wet or muddy. There was a lot to be seen!! There were stands selling hats, caps, bracelets, wellies, farming accessories and of course food. There was also a smaller scale version of the popular theme park Funderland. At around half past two that afternoon, the year group rejoined together outside the RTÈ tent and slowly but surely we made our way back to our bus, and returned to the school at about five o clock that evening.

Imeachtaí Dé Chéadaoin

Gach Céadaion tar éis loin, téann gach dalta san Idirbhliain ar imeachtaí difrúila. Bíonn muid scartha i ngrupaí difruil agus ceapaim go bhfuil sin go hiontach mar bíonn deis agat cairde nua a dhéanamh agus buaileann tú le gach duine sa bhliain. Bíonn na grupaí ar rota ionas go mbíonn seans ag gach duine, gach rud a dhéanamh. Go dtí seo i mbliana tá na rudaí seo a leanas déanta againn:

Everyone Wednesday evening after lunch all the TY students go on different activities. We are split up into different groups are given a chance to be with everyone. The groups are on a rota basis and everyone has a chance to complete each activity. So far this year we have completed the following activities to name a few:

  • University Open Days – UL, MaryI, LIT & NUIG
  • Karting
  • Derg Isle Activity Centre
  • Golf
  • Bowling
  • Tennis

An Roinn Tíreolaíochta

On the 6th of October Sixth Year students of Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh traveled to Liscannor Bay and Lahinch as part of their Geographical Investigation which is worth 20% of their Leaving Cert exam.  The students studied the composition of the cliffs and cliff erosion at Creg Beach and Clauhan Beach. This field study helped to develop the students geographical skills as they used a variety of geographical instruments that they had not used previous to this and it brought to life what they had studied in class on coastal erosion. It was a great day out and the weather was good to us. Sixth year students are now busy writing up their field study reports.

Ar an séú lá de Mhí Dheireadh Fómhair chuaigh an séú bhliain go dtí Bá Lios Ceannúir agus an Leacht mar phairt den thionscadal allamuigh atá le déanamh acu don Ardteist mar pháirt den chúrsa tíreolaíochta, atá 20%. Thaisteal siad ar dtús chuig Bá Lios Ceannúir go dtí Trá Creg agus ar aghaidh ansin go dtí Trá Clauhan, áit a rinne siad staidéar ar chomhdhéanamh agus gníomhaíochtaí creimeadh na haill. Thug an tionscadal seo an deis dóibh a scileanna tíreolaíochta a fhorbairt tríd uirlísí tíreolaíochta nua a úsáid agus thug sé deis dóibh na rudaí a d’fhoghlaim siad sa rang a fheiceáil ag tarlú go réadúlacht. Tá na daltaí gnóthach faoi láthair ag scríobh suas na tuairiscí ar an dtionscadal allamuigh.

An Roinn Ceol

Ceolchoirm Cork Pops le Asha Golden, Bliain 1

Bhí an turas Cork Pops sármhaith. Bhí an turas ar an mbus thart ar uair an chloig agus bhí go leor cainte agus comhrá. Mhothaigh sé cosúil le dhá nóiméad! Shuigh mé in aice le mo chara  Emer agus bhí mo chara Naoise ina suí os ár gcomhair. Ar an turas stopamar ag Supermacs chun bia a fháil. Roinn mise agus Emer  sceallóga le anlann gairleoga agus cáis lena chéile. Bhí sé an-bhlasta. An chéad uirlis a bhí ag seinnt ná an veidhlín agus chualamar óbó, dordveidhil, olldord, fliúit, clairnéad & corn chomh maith. Bhí an ceol go h-álainn. Tháinig Keith McKinerney amach ar an stáitse agus bhí sé ag canadh. Bhí gach duine ina sheasamh agus ag damhsa. Bhí gach MÚINTEOIR ag damhsa freisin!! Bhain mé taitneamh as an lá agus ba mhaith liom é a dhéanamh arís.

The Cork Pops concert was excellent. The trip on the bus was more than an hour long but it felt like two minutes. I sat next to my friend Emer and my other friend Naoise sat in front of us. On the way we stopped in Supermacs to buy food. Emer and I shared a garlic chip n’ cheese, it was delicious. The first instrument to play was the violin but we also heard an oboe, cello, double bass, flute, clarinet and horn. The music was lovely. Keith McKinerney came out onto the stage and sang a few songs.  Everyone was standing and dancing. Even every TEACHER was dancing!! Overall, I enjoyed the concert a lot and I’d love to go again.

Club Traid le Clodagh O’ Farrell, Caoimhe Cahill & Megan Cronin, Bliain 1

Téimid go dtí Club Trad gach seachtain ar an Máirt agus buailimid leis an Máistir Mac an Rí. Rinneamar ‘Trad For Trócaire’ ar an 26 Mean Fómhair. Sheinmeamar a lán amhráin, mar shampla ‘Boys of Blue Hill’, ‘Maurice Lennons’ agus ‘Denis Murphy’s’. Bhailíomar €330 do Trócaire. Gach cúpla mí seinmimid sna seirbhísí agus ceolchoirmeacha. Sheinneamar don Aire Jan O’ Sullivan ag an searmanas don Bhrat Glas i mí na Samhna agus beimid ag seinm sa cheolchoirm Nollag ar an 11 Nollaig. Is én fáth go bhfuil an ‘Club Trad’ an-mhaith mar tá múinteoir an-mhaith againn!

We do traditional music every week on a Tuesday with our teacher, an Mháistir Mac an Rí. We did a fundrasiser for Trócaire on 26th September and we raised €330. We played a lot of pieces like Boys of Blue Hill, Maurice Lennon`s and Denis Murphy`s. Every couple of months we play for services and concerts. We will be playing our instruments for the Christmas service soon. We got to play for the Minister, Jan O’ Sullivan for the ceremony for the Brat Glas in November and we will perform at the Christmas concert on the 11th December. We are very good in the traditional music club because we have an excellent teacher!

Young Artist Development Awards  le Ava Barrett, Bliain 5

I entered the competition in transition year. The whole year group got involved. Everyone had a job to do to make the concert a reality. I was the winner from our school, with my song 1964. This year I went to the final. I was awarded the overall prize, a year in a development programme including the opportunity to record 1964.

Ghlac mé phairt don chéad uair i YADA san idirbhliain. Ghlac gach duine eile sa bliain grupa páirt i slí eigin. Bhí post ag gach aon duine chun an cheolchoirm a cuir ar siúl gan fadhb. Bhuaidh mé  as an scoil, leis an amhráin 1964, bhí spás agam sa ceannais. An bhliain seo, chuaigh mé go dtí an ceannais. Bhuaidh mé agus anois beidh mé ag obair leo i gcomhair an bhliain, comh maith le dluthíosca a dhéanamh leis an amhráin 1964.

Ceolchorim na Nollag le Sinéad Toomey, Bliain 5

This year, our school Christmas concert will be held in the Belltable on the 11th of December. A huge number of students are taking part this year from first year to six year, there will also be a special appearance from Mick and Michelle Mulcahy that night, for us, this is a huge privilege as the Mulcahys are renowned around the world for their traditional music. I will be taking part with a band called Gaiscíoch alongside other incredibly talented musicians and bands, we’re all really excited to be taking part. I’m really looking forward to seeing all the other great performances that are lined up for the concert. Everyone really looks forward to the Christmas concert each year and this year is no different. The concert will start during the day for the students and during the evening family and parents are more than welcome to attened.

Bhí ceolchorim na Nollaig ar siúl ar an 11 Nollaig sa Belltable. Bhí thart ar 20 acht ag glacadh pairt sa ceolchorim agus beidh aoi speisialta, Na Mulcathys ag glacadh pairt san oíche chomh maith. Beidh míse agus an banna ceoil Gaiscíoch ag glacadh pairt i measc ceoltoirí agus bannaí eile ón gcéad bhlian go dtí an séú bliain, bhí na trialacha ar siúl inné agus is léir go mbeidh tallann den scoth le feiscint ar an stáitse an bhliain seo.Táim ag siúl go mór le achtanna eile a fheicéal ann a chuala mé inné cosúil le Ava, Kate agus Jodie agus a lán daoine nár chuala mé  fós. Bíonn gach duine ag súil go mór leis an gceolchorim gach bliain agus is rud iontach é go mbeidh muntir Cathair Luimnigh in ann teacht chun an tallann agus an ceol a fheiscint i mbliana. Beidh an ceolchorim ar siúl i gcomhair an lá ar fad agus san oíche beidh fáilte roimh tuismitheoirí agus pobail luimnigh freastail ar an gceolchorim.

Feachtas le Huan Thompson, Bliain 5

Chuaigh mé féin agus cúpla scoláire eile go dtí an Axes amharclann i Baile Muna, chun páirt a ghlacadh i bhFeachtas, comórtas ceoil trí Ghaeilge. Chuamar suas ar an 21ú lá de mhí Deireadh Fomhair leis an Mháistreás Ní Mhuiríosa. Bhí mé féin, Sinéad Toomey ón gcúigiú blian, Grace Austin agus Conor Wallace ón séú bliain agus Chloe Milliken, Jack MacSheáin agus Eddie Hellewell ón triú bhliain. Chum Sinéad an t-amhrán a chanamar agus chum Jeaic an t-amhrán a chan siad. Bhí mé an neirbhíseach a bheith ar an stáitse mar ní raibh mé ar stáitse mór cheanna. Bhí lá iontach againn ag déanamh cleachtadh agus á chanadh don lucht éisteachta. Ba é an duais ná dearbhán do shiopa ceoil i mBaile Atha Cliath agus taifead a dhéanamh ar an amhrán i stiúdeo. Bhí díomá orainn nár bhuaimear ach bhí an duais tuillte ag an ngrúpa a bhuaigh. Ar aon nós, bhí lá iontach againn agus thug sé taithí dúinn a bheith i gCath na mBannaí.

Myself and a couple of other students went to the Axes theatre in Ballymun to take part in a music competition called Feachtas. We went up on the 21st of October with an Mháistreás Ní Mhuiríosa. It was Sinead and I from fifth year, Grace Austin and Conor Wallace from sixth year and Chloe Milliken, Jeaic MacSheáin and Eddie Hellewell from third year. Sinead wrote the song we sang and Jeaic wrote the song their group sang. I was really nervous about being on stage as I had never been before. We had a great day when we arrived, practising, performing and listening to the other acts. The prize for the winning band was a voucher for a music shop in  Dublin and also the chance to record their song in a studio. Unfortunately we didn’t win the competition and we were a little disappointed but the group that won definitely deserved to win. At least we had an amazing day and it gave us the experience of being in a battle of the bands.

An Cór – le Naoise Meaghar & Emer Madden, Bliain 1

Sa chór, d’fhoghlaimíomar a lán amhráin gach seachtain. Don seirbhís, chanamar “Ar scáth ar chéile,” “Ceangailte le chéile,” “Grá amháin,” agus “A Íosa ghlan mo chroise”. Anois táimid ag foghlaim amhráin do Sheirbhís na Nollag, mar shampla, “Ring Christmas Bells,” “O Holy Night,” agus “In the Bleak Mid-Winter”. Bainimid an-taitneamh as an gcór. Rinneamar cairde nua agus chuamar go dtí an ceolchoirm ‘Cork Pops’ i gCorcaigh. Ba mhaith linn ár mbuíochas a ghabháil don ‘Mháistress Ní Mhuiríosa’ agus an ‘Maistir Mac an Rí’. Tá siad ag déanamh an-job leis an gcór, an club ceoil agus an club traid! Tá siad an-oilte. Go raibh míle, míle maith agaibh!

In the choir, we learn a lot of new songs every week. For the start of the year service we sang Ar Scáth a Chéile, Ceangailte le Chéile, Grá Amháin agus A Íosa, Glan Mo Chroíse. Now we are learning songs for the Christmas service, for example Ring Christmas Bells, O Holy Night and In The Bleak Mid-Winter. We really enjoy choir. We made new friends and we went to the Cork Pops concert in Cork. We’d like to thank an Mháistreás Ní Mhuiríosa and an Mháistir Mac an Rí for all their hard work with the choir, club ceoil and club traid. They are very talented. Thank you very, very much.

Seirbhís Tús na Bliana le Jack O’ Callaghan, Bliain 5

Seachtain i ndiadh seachtaine de ullmhúcháin is obair, ó thaobh múinteoirí agus daltaí de, go léir ag comhthógáil don Seirbhís Tús na mBliana. Siombail deartha ag muintir gach rang, agus cleachtadh dian déanta ag na daltaí ag tógáil páirt, léitheoirí agus ceoltóirí ina measc. Eagar mórthaibhseach de talún, go léir céiliúrtha ar lá amháin. Lá eachtrúil, cinnte. Bhí mé féin mar bhall de na ceoltóirí ag seinm aonréad. Ar an lá, chuamar síos go dtí séipéil Naomh Mhuire i gcomhair cleachtadh. Idir na léitheoirí, na ceoltóirí, an cór, is na múinteoirí, bhí slua mór dúinn thall. Ritheamar tríd na píosaí faoí dhó, na h-aonréadaí san áireamh. Sheinn mé píosa nua-aimseartha ar an bpianó, darbh ainm “All of a Me” le Jon Schmidt. Bhí aon-aonréad-déag eile a sheinn píosaí den scoth, ar an ngiotár, ar an bpianó, an veidhlín, an fhliúit is ag canadh. Bhí atmaisféir iontach fuinniúl nuair a thánaig an slua mór de na ranganna isteach sa séipéil. Shuigh gach duine isteach agus thosaigh an seirbhís. Dar ndóigh, ba sheirbhís den scoth é, le ceol traidisiúnta ó na ceoltóirí, siombail cruthaitheach ó na ranganna ar fad, is atmaisféar bríomhar, áthasach. Ag deireadh an Seirbhís, gabhadh buíochas leis an Mháistreáis Ní Mhuiríosa agus an Mháistreáis Ní Úaithne as an Seirbhís a eagrú. Lá den scoth ab ea é.

Weeks of preparation and work, on the part of both teachers and students leading up to the start of the year service. Symbols and artworks designed by members of every class, and practice by the students taking part, speakers and musicians alike. An impressive array of talent, all celebrated and demonstrated on one day. An eventful day, definitely. I, myself, was part of the soloists. On the day, we all went down to Saint Mary’s Church to practice. Between the choir, the speakers, the soloists and the musicians, and the teachers, there was a large crowd of us. We all went through the pieces twice in preparation, including the soloists. I played a modern piece called “All of Me” by Jon Schmidt on the piano. There were eleven other soloists that played at the service, playing pieces on the piano, the guitar, the flute and singing. There was a fantastic atmosphere when the classes and teachers entered the church. Everyone sat in, and the service started. It was a fantastic service, with an electric atmosphere.

At the end of the service, thanks were paid to an Mháistreás Ní Mhuiríosa and an Mháistreás Ní Úaithne. It was a fantastic day.

Scléip le Caela O’Shaughnessy, Bliain 2

Anuraidh, chuaigh mise, Taylor, Becky agus Leah go dtí Corcaigh i gcomhair Scléip. Rinneamar damhsa darbh ainm An Cogadh Damhsa. Bhí dhá stíl difriúl againn, rince gaeilge agus ‘freestyle’. Bhí na damhsóirí gaeilge in aghaidh na damhsóirí freestyle. Bhíomar gléasta suas sna héadaí céanna agus chaitheamar smideadh. Chuaigh an rang ceoil chun tacaíocht a thabhairt dúinn. Bhí an stáitse an-mhór agus bhí an lucht féachanna plódaithe le daoine. Bhuamar síos i gCorcaigh agus chuamar ar aghaigh go dtí Baile Átha Cliath. Bhí an comórtas sin níos crua mar bhí níos mó daoine. Bhí éadaí difriúla againn agus bhí ár damhsa beagáinín níos deacra .Bhíomar na buatóirí agus bhí áthas an domhain orainn.

Scléip
Last year, Taylor, Becky, Leah and I went to Cork for Scleip. We performed a dance called An Cogadh Damhsa. We did two different styles of dance – Irish dancing and freestyle dancing. The Irish dancers were against the freestyle dancers. We all wore the same clothes and wore makeup. We had our own dressing rooms down in Cork. The music class came with us to support us. The stage was massive with spotlights. The audience was full aswell. We won the competition and went on to the All Irelands in Dublin. We changed our routine a small bit and wore different outfits. The competition was a lot harder but we still won out the category. We were delighted!

An Roinn Ealaíne

Chuaigh 25 dalta ón Idirbhliain suas go dtí na Printmakers  i gcearnóg Eoin ar an 5ú lá Meán Fómhair go dtí ceardlann ealaíne ‘Tharraing mé print’. Bhuail na daltaí le ealaíontóirí  áitiúil agus mhúin na healaíontóirí seo cúpla scil ealaíne dóibh. Bhí meascán do dhaltaí a rinne ealaíon roimhe agus daltaí ná dhearna ealaíon roimhee. Bhí seans ag gach dalta cúpla píosa ealaín a dhéanamh dóibh féin. Bhain gach dalta an-taitneamh as an lá seo. Bhí an gclár teilifíse  Imeall ó TG4 ag déanamh taifead ar Luimneach ar an lá sin agus chuaigh ceathrair ón ghrúpa faoi agallaimh. Craoladh an clár seo ar TG4 ar an 18ú Deireadh Fómhair.

Doodle for Google

A big group of the Carpenters, Builders and Designers have started with us this year in the Technology department. They are a hardworking bunch and are very welcome!

First Year

Our first years have spent most of the winter learning about workshop safety, woodworking tools and how the tree grows. At the moment they are working hard to complete a little boat project before we finish up for Christmas

Second Years

This group have just finished a fantastic CD stand and the general standard has been very high. They are now working on a bird house to keep the Robins warm over the Christmas

Third Year

The third years are working very hard at designing their Junior Cert projects at the minute. The ideas they have come up with so far have been very interesting and we are really looking forward to seeing the designs realised.

Fifth Year

It’s been a really busy term for the fifth years as they began new courses for the Leaving Cert.

In Construction Studies the students have been learning about the domestic construction techniques and are currently honing their woodworking skills in creating dovetails and cross-halving joints.

In DCG the lads are developing their draughting skills and creating 3D models on Solidworks®

Sixth Year

The students are flat out working to complete their Leaving Cert Projects and we are really looking forward to seeing some of this excellent work completed.

Seachtain Eolaíochta 2014

Bhí an-spóirt ag na daltaí le linn Seachtain Eolaíocht i mbliana. An teideal i mbliana ná “Eolaíocht inár gCistin” agus sin go díreach a bhí ar siúl acu.  Le linn an seachtain bhí Coke ag pléascadh, ullmhúcháin posóidí, múinteoirí trí thine agus scamall mór cruthaithe le oighear tirim! Is beag an difríocht idir an rang sin agus na ranganna a bhíonn ar siúl in Hogsworth!

Bhí na daltaí agus múinteoirí an-sásta le caighdeán na tionscnaimh eolaíochta a chur na daltaí i láthair sna ranganna eolaíochta. Bhí smaointe den scoth ag chách agus is mór an obair phraicticiúla a bhí curtha isteach ag gach éinne. Bhí sár-caighdeán ag baint leis an oibre agus bhí cinne an-dheacair le dhéanamh ag na múinteoirí. Faoi dheireadh bhí  grupaí roghnaithe, agus duaiseanna bhronnta orthu ag deireadh an seacthain speisialta. Is cosúil is go bhfuil an todhchaí deas gile amach romhainn ón cumas agus suim san eolaíocht a bhí ag daltaí an chéad bhliain i mbliaina!

Bhí daltaí na hIdirbliana ag oibriú go diain ag teacht suas le Seachtain Eolaíocht, lena gcuid físeanna eolaíochta a ullmhú. Chruthaigh siad físeanna iontacha ar topaicí eolaíochta éagsúla –  an Croí, Bia agus AnCnámharlach ina measc. Bhí caighdeán na físeanna  thar barr i mbliana, bhaineamar ar fad an-taitneamh astu.

GCL students had a blast during this year’s science week.  The title this year was ‘Science in our Kitchen’ and that’s exactly what the students produced. There was coke exploding, potions prepared, teachers on fire and clouds produced by dry ice. There was little difference between our classes and those in Hogsworth!

The students and teachers were delighted with the standard of projects presented in class for ‘Eolaí na Bliana’. Students showcased an impressive scope of ideas, each backed up with outstanding practical evidence. With such high standards displayed it was a tough task for the science department to pick the winners of Eolaí na Bliana. Eventually  groups were awarded at a special science awards throughout the week. It is fair to say that although our first year students have only just started studying this new and exciting subject, we are already seeing natural flair and enthusiasm in the labs. The future is most definitely looking bright for science in GCL!

The second years were given a hard task of researching and experimenting on specific titles.  The projects were written up in accordance to Coursework B of the Junior Certificate so that the students would gain experience at recording and analysing science results. They also visited UL to see a mad scientist performing crazy experiments.

Our fifth years were given the opportunity to plan, record and edit videos of experiments they had carried out. This experience will greatly benefit the students going forward as well as providing invaluable revision tools for next year. Our fifth year chemistry students were also  taking part in professional video shoot showing exemplar titration methods, well done to all. They also spent some time researching and coming up with some witty chemistry jokes, for example: ‘Why did the acid go to the gym? To become a buffer solution!’

Our sixth years took part in the ISTA regional science quiz and they did very well. Comhghairdeas guys!!  Our third and sixth year students are working incredibly hard for the exams and we support them all the way to their success. All of your students took part in Tráth na gCeist for science week through Google Drive and we had three worthy winners, Emmet Frawley, Eoin Jardine and Meave Fahy.

Daltaí na hIdirbhliana

Comhghairdeas leis na daltaí a glac part san Science Olympiad i mbliana. Bhí siad i measc na daltaí a fuair na marcanna is airde in eolaíocht san Teastas Sóisearach 2014. Táimid fíor bhródúil ar fad. Paddy O Brien, Ailish Ní Fhaoile, Lilian Ní Thuathail agus Niall Herlihy.

Our fourth years were asked to design videos on a Junior Certificate topic.  Many hearts were broken, stomachs rumbled and bones broken during the making of these videos.  The standard was fantastic yet again, well done guys.

Cúpla Focail ón gCéad Bhliain agus an Idirbhliain

Rang Chaitríona- Bl.1 Casey O’Brien

My transition from Primary to Secondary school in Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh has been oneof the highlights of my life so far! Studying all my subjects through Irish was challenging at first, but I have to say I have settled in very well. The very welcoming teachers and staff have helped so much with this matter. I have met so many new and interesting friends, who I would be lost without! I am looking forward to enjoying the coming years in GCL.

Tá m’aistriú ón mbunscoil go meánscoil i nGaelcholaiste Luimnigh ar cheann de na rudaí is fearr gur tharla i mo shaol . Rinne mé an oiread sin cairde nua agus gan iad bheinn caillte ar fad. Sea bhí an Ghaeilge deacair ar dtús, ach shochraigh mé isteach.  Chabhraigh na múinteoirí agus an fhoireann ar fad leis an ábhar seo. Tá mé cinnte go mbainfidh mé taitneamh as na blianta atá romham i nGaelcholáiste Luimnigh.

Rang Áine – Bl. 1

Dia dhaoibh go léir agus beannachtaí na Nollag ó Rang Aine, an rang is fearr sa chéad bhliain. Is rang den chéad scoth é ár rang agus reitíonn gach duine go maith lena chéile. Tugann gach duine cabhair lena chéile. Bíonn an-spórt againn an t-am ar fad. Tá múinteoirí an-mhaith againn agus cabhraíonn ár oide M. de Blacúil linn le gach rud. Tá roinnt den rang as Luimneach agus roinnt eile as Contae an Chláir. Tá a lán suimeanna sa rang cosúil le sacar, rugbaí, cócaireacht, ceoil agus létheoireacht. Táimid ag baint taitnimh as an mbliain go dtí seo. Táimid ag éirí go maith leis an nGaeilge. Chuamar go dtí Lahinch i mí Meán Fomhair. Turas iontach ab ea é. Tá scrúduithe na Nollag ag teacht suas. Táimid ag staidéir go crua dóibh. Táimid ag súil go mór leis an Nollaig agus laethanta saoire na Nollag.

An Idirbhliain

Rang Parnell le Cristín Ní Choisdealbha

Táim ach trí mhí isteach chuig an hIdirbhlian agus tá na méid rudaí a bhfuilim tar éis tabhairt faoi go dtí seo dochreidte. Ag teacht isteach chuig an bhlian seo bhí mé chinnte faoi chad ba mhaith liom a dhéanamh sa todhcaí, ach tar éis na turasanna chuig coláistí éagsúla agus an méid eolas a fuair mé faoin réimse mór de gairmeacha a mbeidh mé in ann tabhairt faoi, tá mo intinn athraithe fiche uaire arís.

Táim tar éis an sampla a fháil den Roinn Ainmhíocht (Zoology?) thuas i Ollscoil na Gaillimhe, an Roinn Innealtóireacht i Ollscoil Luimnigh agus an Roinn Béarla sa choláiste Mhuire Gan Smól agus tá gach cheann níos suimiúl ná an cheann roimhe. Chomh maith le laethanta oscailte, tá na maidin gairmeacha churtha ar fáil chun na ollscoileanna eile timpeall na tíre a fheiceáil.

Is bhliain iontach é do tionscnamh móra a dhéanamh agus chun rudaí nua a thrialú. Ó thús na bliana táim tar éis páirt a ghlacadh i lá fhorbairt foirinne, blas den talamhaíocht a fháil sna comórtas ploughing, a bheith mar páirt de fhoireann bhainc le AIB agus chomh maith le seo, ghlac mé páirt i dtionscnamh le AIB ina chuaigh mé chuig an tionól teicneolaíchta Web Summit le 20 dhalta eile agus d’oibrigh muid mar infheisteoirí chun €10,000 a thabhairt chuig mionchomhlacht.

Anois táim i mbun oibre san stáisiún raidió Spin South West chun fháil amach níos mó faoi chonas a oibríonn stáisiún raidió mar pháirt de mo chuid taithí oibre. Chomh maith ke seo táim ag dhéanamh obair deonach leis an gcomhlacht Share a Dream agus á cabhrú leo áthais a thabhairt chuig páistí óige le míchumas.

Bhí na trí mhí a bhfuil imithe plódaithe le ghníomhaíochtaí agus taithí iontacht agus táim ag súil leis an bliain a bhfuil chun teacht.

Transition Year

I am only three months into Transition year and the amount of activities and events that have happened so far is almost unbelievable. Earlier this year, I thought I had my career and future sorted, my heart set on a career in journalism. However, upon entering Transition year, I’m starting to see a whole new range of careers and occupations opening up to me after attending copious amounts of career mornings and open days. I’ve sampled the Zoology Department of NUIG, the Engineering Department in UL and the English Department in Mary I. Each one more impressive than the last.

This year has been a fantastic opportunity to try new things and start new, interesting projects I didn’t have the time to undertake in other years due to studies and exams. Since the beginning of this year I have partaken in a Team Building day in Derg Isle, received an insight into the world of agriculture at the Ploughing Championships, joined an AIB bank team to help create a new innovative bank idea to compete against other schools and I was also granted the opportunity to attend the Web Summit technology convention and act as an investor with 20 other students after winning a marketing competition. We were given €10,000 to invest in a startup we believed would change the future.

I am currently undergoing a week of work experience at Spin South West, a local radio station. Here I am studying how the radio works and what kind of jobs I will have if I choose to work in radio. I am also volunteering at the Share a Dream Foundation, helping to bring happiness to disabled children.

The last three months have been pretty packed with amazing opportunities and experiences and I love forward to the rest of the year to come!

Nuacht ón Scoil Ghlas

Ar an 25ú Samhain, bhí ceardlann ag daltaí na dara bhliana ar Léarscáileanna Taistil. Tháinig Ellen O Sullivan ó An Taisce, Green Schools  agus Sharon  Lynch ó Limerick Smarter Travel isteach don lá chun ceardlann a dhéanamh leis na daltaí. Bhí na daltaí ag obair ar léarscáileanna móra do cheantar Luimnigh agus ag aimsiú rudaí difriúla cosúil leis na comharthaí talún is mó agus is tábhachtaí sa chathair,ag aimsiú a mbealach chun na scoile, bealaí busanna éagsúla I Luimneach agus na cinn gur féidir linn a spreagadh ar scoil, chomh maith le bealaí páirceála agus siúl timpeall na scoile.

An fheidhm a bhain leis an gceardlann seo ná tuiscint a thabhairt do na daltaí agus iad a chur ar an eolas agus ag smaoineamh faoin fhadhb na tráchta sa cheantar agus bealaí chun laghdú a dhéanamh ar an trácht, chomh maith le bealaí níos sábháilte a aimsiú chun dul ar scoil agus abhaile.

Táimid ag súil go mór leis an téama ar thaisteal a chur I bhfeidhm toisc gur théama an-suimiúl é . Tá súil againn gur féidir linn meon daoine a athrú faoin modh a úsáideann siad chun teach tar scoil agus iarracht a dhéanamh níos mó daoine a mhealladh chun siúl, iompar poiblí a úsáid nó páirceáil agus siúl a úsáid.

Green Schools News

Ellen O’Sullivan and Sharon Lynch from An Taisce Green Schools and Limerick Smarter Travel visited the school on Tuesday 25th of November to carry out a Travel Mapping workshop with all second year students. All second year classes had an hour of the Travel Mapping Workshop where they studied maps of Limerick City at different scales. Students identified the location of Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh, their route to school and home, locations of interest in the city, possible park and stride locations, bus routes around the city and what bus routes the school could promote. The reason for this workshop was to make students more aware of the environmental impacts of the different methods of travel and to try to change students’ attitudes towards a greener method of travelling as well as promoting the health and safety aspects of travel. Students also identified alternative methods of transport to and from school.

Following this workshop, students assessed routes for the positive and negative attributes relative to walking in the form of a  ‘Walk-ability Audit’, examples of this included, the timing on crossings, is there enough space on footpaths etc. Students thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and the walk-ability audit, it got students thinking about how to become a greener citizen and developed their mapping skills and local geographical and travel information.

The Green Schools Committee are very excited about the travel theme and are excited about implementing their ideas in the coming year. We are privileged to have such a fantastic Environmental Officer from An Taisce working with us to help us implement and promote this new theme.

Ardaíonn an t-Aire Oideachais & Scileanna ár dTriú Brat Glas

Ar an Aoine, an 28ú Samhain, bhí searmanas ag Coiste na Scoile Ghlasa GCL chun an triú brat do Chaomhnú Uisce a chéiliúradh agus a ardú. Thosaigh an tsearmanas amach le ceol álainn ó Eibhlín Halpin (Bl 5) fad is a thóg daoine a gcathaoireacha. Chuir cathaoirleach an Choiste Glas David Sheehan (Bl 5) fáilte roimh gach éinne agus chuir sé na cainteoirí ar fad in iúl do gach duine. Ina dhiaidh sin bhí óráid againn ó Evan Sheehan (Bl 3), baill don choiste glas a labhair faoin dá bhliain atá caite aige ar an gcoiste agus na dualgaisí a bhí aige agus na postanna a bhain an coiste amach chomh maith leis na gníomhaíochtaí a d’eagraigh siad chun an brat seo a bhaint fháil. Bhí óráid inspioráideach againn ansin ón Aire Jan O’Sullivan agus labhair an Príomhoide chomh maith. Bhronn Gráinne bronntanas bheag uirthi ag deireadh an searmanas. Sheinn an club traid ceol álainn ag deireadh an tsearmanas agus ina ndiaidh chuaigh an coiste agus an t-Aire suas go dtí an ceathrú úrlár chun an brat glas a árdú. Bhreathnaigh na daltaí agus na múinteoirí suas ón mbunúrlár agus thug siad bualadh bos mór nuair a bhí an brat á ardú. Bhí atmaisféar iontach ann. Bhí soláistí curtha ar fáil ina dhiaidh. Ba mhaith liom mo bhuíochas a ghábháil leis an gcoiste as an tréan oibre atá déanta chun an brat seo a bhaint amach agus as na daltaí agus múinteoirí ar fad as a gcuid tacaíochta leis an dtéama uisce.

Minister for Education and Skills Raises our Third Green Flag

On Friday 28th of November the Green Schools Committee raised their third Green Flag for Water Conservation. This flag raising ceremony was held to celebrate the hard work and success of the Green Schools Committee and the whole school community over the last two years, as we worked towards achieving our third green flag. Students, teachers, parents, representatives of the Schools Board of Management, Parents Council and members of Limerick City Council and An Taisce all attended the ceremony.

Eibhlín Halpin (5th year student) played beautifully on the keyboard while guests took their seats. David Sheehan (Chairperson of the Green Schools Committee) welcomed everyone to the ceremoney. Evan Sheehan (3rd Year) spoke to the audience about the hard and continued work of the committee over the last two years in achieving this flag. GCL’s trad group closed the ceremony with some beautifully played energetic music.

Our Principal, Donncha Ó Treasaigh praised the students on their efforts to educate their fellow students on preserving the environment. Minister Jan O Sullivan gave an inspirational speech. She praised the students for their passion and wished us all the success as we continue to work towards our fourth green flag.

The Green Schools Committee, our Principal, Donncha Ó Treasaigh and the Minister then made their way to the fourth floor of the school building to raise the flag. Students and teachers applauded from the ground floor as they watched the flag being raised. It now fly’s proudly alongside our two other green flags, high above the city.  Refreshments were provided after the ceremony.

Comhairle na nDaltaí

Chríochnaigh Comhairle na nDaltaí 2013/2014 suas díreach tar éis an mBriseadh Lár Téarma nuair a bhí Toghchan chun Comhairle nua a thoghadh ag tús mí na Samhna 2014. Bhí an-obair déanta leis an sean-Comhairle i rith na bliana seo caite ag freastal ar ócáidí speisialta na scoile,  ag labhairt le bainistíocht na scoile faoi polasaithe agus cinntí a bhí á dhéanamh srl. Is é an éacht is mó a bhí bainte amach ag an gComhairle sin ná an bhialann nua a thógáil isteach sa scoil, rud atá ag dul ó neart go neart.

Toghadh an Comhairle nua tar éis feachtas fíor-iomaíoch. Bhí leath-lá traenála ag an gComhairle nua ar an 17ú Samhain agus bhaineadh an taitneamh agua tairbhe as. Táimid ag súil go mór le obair libh i rith na bliana atá romhainn.

Is iad na daoine a bhí roghnaithe ag a gcomhscoláirí ná: Ailbhe de Brún, Elva Harrington & Zoe O Dwyer (Bliain 6), Cillian Moloney, Muireann Bennett & David Ó Síocháin (Bliain 5), Deirbhile Kiely O Doherty, Ailish Ní Fhaoile & Thomas Kearns Horan (Bliain 4), John Lillis, Bethany O Donovan, Richard Kelly, Tadhg Horan, (Bliain 3), Josh McGiff, Sara Kelly, Fergus McLoughlin, David Kennedy, (Bliain 2) Kevin Tuite, Alex Ní Riain, Sheila McGiff, Seán Leddin (Bliain 1).

The 2013/2014 Student Council came to an end just after the mid term break when a new Student Council was elected at the beginning of November 2014. The old council had done fantastic work throughout their term of office attending school functions, discussing school policies with School Management, etc. Their most notable achievement of the previous Student Council was their role in attaining a new Student Canteen which has gone from strength to strength since its introduction to the school.

After a very competitive Election Campaign, the new Council was elected.  They then participated in a half day’s training with Doncal Fitzgibbon, facilitator which they really enjoyed and benefitted from. We are really looking forward to working with the Student Council during the year.
