We hope the Statistic’s Competition with our Juniors will inspire them to continue to enjoy Statistics like our Senior students. For a third year running, Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh achieved placings in the acclaimed John Hooper Medal for Statistics ran by the Central Statistics Office, the students in question are pictured below.

Comórtas Staitisticí John Hooper/John Hooper Medal for Statistics

Roimh Nollag 2012 san Idirbhliain thosaíomar ag obair ar an gcomórtas Staitisticí John Hooper. Dúirt an múinteoir linn chun dul I ngrúpaí de beirt nó triúr agus chuamar le chéile. D’inis an múinteoir linn go raibh téama ann an bhliain seo agus is é an téama a bhí ann ná Talmhaíocht. Is é an chéad chéim ar seo ná chun tob-smaointe a dhéanamh ar na rudaí a cheapamar go mbeadh suimiúl agus rathúil sa chomórtas. Is é an tionscnamh a thangamar suas le ná “What Do They Really Think?” agus is é an aidhm a bhí againn le seo ná chun  fáil amach an tábhacht a bhaineann le feirmeoirí inár shaol agus an eolas a bhí ag déagóirí ar táirgí Éireannach. An chéad chéim eile, bhaineamar úsáid as Google Docs chun suirbhé a cruthu agus sheolamar é chuig gach dalta inár scoil. Bhí na daltaí eile inár rang ag baint úsáide as súirbhéanna freisin chun an tionscnamh a dhéanamh ar topaic a bhí difriúl ach fós a bhí ag baint leis an téama Talmhaíocht. Bhailíomar na torthaí agus ansin chuireamar iad ar ghraifeanna difriúla mar shampla treograif, píchairt agus freisin fuaireamar amach an chomhghaolú ar roinnt do na ceisteanna. Níor thóg sé ach tamall beag chun an postaer a chuir le chéile agus le cabhair ón mhúinteoir an Mháistreas Ní Cheallaigh bhíomar an sásta leis. San iomlán bhaineamar an taitneamh as an taithí seo agus d’fhoghlamar scileanna nua mar shampla cumarsáid,staitisticí agus teicneolaíocht. Bhíomar an sásta leis an obair a chuireamar isteach agus mar thoradh fuaireamar “Order of Merit” sa Chomórtas John Hooper. Freisin fuair Aisling Duffy agus Oisín Ó Muirlithe “Order of Merit” agus is léir go rinne Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh an-mhaith sa chomórtas seo de bharr obair na daltaí sa rang agus ón chomhairle maith a thug an mhúinteoir dúinn. Ar an seachtú lá déag de mhí Dheireadh Fómhair 2013 fuaireamar an deis dul chuig Baile Átha Cliath chun ár eacht a cheiliúradh lenár múinteoir sa Roinn Oideachais. Bhaineamar an-taitneamh as an lá agus táim ag súil le cur isteach ann arís an bhliain seo chugainn.

Before Christmas 2012 during Transition year we started working on The John Hooper Statistical Competition. The teacher told us to go in groups of two or three and we went together. The teacher informed us that this year there was a theme and we found out the project had to be based on Agriculture. The first step to this competition was brainstorming an idea, we thought would be interesting and successful in the competition. The name of our project was “What Do They Really Think?”. The aim of our project was to find out what people really thought of farmers and how important they were in society and also what information teenagers had on Irish Produce. Our next step was creating a survey, we used Google Docs and sent it to students in our school. The other students in our class were also creating surveys and sending them around the school as part of the statistical competition, each group had a slightly different topic but still about the theme Agriculture. We gathered our results and started creating different graphs on excel. We created numerous types of graphs for examples, correlation graphs, pie charts and bar charts. It didn’t take long for our poster to come together with the help of our teacher Mhaistréas Ní.Cheallaigh, and we were very pleased with our poster. Overall we really enjoyed taking part in this competition and we learnt new skills for example communication, statistics and technology. We were really proud of our work, and it paid off because we were awarded with an “Order of Merit”. Also in our class Aisling Duffy and Oisín Ó Muirlithe received an “Order of Merit” due to their hard work and excellent project.  Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh did extremely well in this competition because of all the hard work everybody in the class put in and thanks to the teachers excellent advice. On the 17th of October 2013, we had the opportunity of celebrating our success in the Department of Education, Dublin. We thoroughly enjoyed our day out and are looking forward to the prospect of entering the competition again for 2014.
