Ábhar Nua / New Subject

We are delighted to announce that Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh has been chosen to offer Politics & Society (September 2016) as a subject in Leaving Certificate.
A new specification for Politics and Society will be introduced in September 2016 to a small cohort of schools who have the capacity and interest to introduce the subject as an optional Leaving Certificate subject. Politics and Society aims to develop the student’s ability to be a reflective and active citizen, in a way that is informed by the insights and skills of social and political science.
Our dearly departed and much loved Board of Management Chairperson, Mr. Frank Prendergast would be very proud with this development.

The introduction of the specification is part of the Department of Education and Skills commemoration of 1916 and its commitment to education for sustainable development.

2015 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2015 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 38,000 times in 2015. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 14 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh pupils visit Brussels

Inniu thóg mé seisear scoláire GCL síos go baile Leuven chun cuairt a thabhairt ar an gcoláiste cáiliúil a bunaíodh ann sa bhliain 1607 (bliain na nGéanna Fiana). Is ann a tháinig Pádraig Sáirséal leis tar éis Conradh Luimnigh & tá sé curtha in Luy na Beilge. Nasc tráthúil le Luimneach!
Trí chairde sa chúirt bhí mé ábalta turas a eagrú le stiúrthóir an ionaid, Christina Geary. Thug sínar thuras sinn, bhí sí ana-chineta lenár ndaltaí agus thug sí a cárta dom chun teagmháil a dhéanamh sa todhchaí. Ní coláiste é a thuilleadh a dúirt sí. Na laethanta seo eagraíonn siad turasanna do chomhlachtaí, scoileanna & polaiteoirí. Is ann a tharla cuid shuntasach de chainteanna rúnda a bhain le Comhaontú Aoine an Chéasta, rud a bhí an-suim ag na daltaí ann. Tá lóistín & bia ar fáil ann do na grúpaí.

Tagann ranganna idirbliana ann, bíonn think-ins ag páirtithe polaitíchta & comhlachtaí ann. Bhí grúpa ó Deloitte ann inniu le haghaidh “think-in”. Sin smaoineamh anois don gcéad cruinniú foirne eile Donncha! Nó an cóisir na Nollag Dáithí! Seo chugaibh roinnt pictiúirí ón lá.

Today I took the six GCL students to the town of Luven to visit the famous Irish College that was established there in 1607 (the same year as The Flight of the Earls). It’s also where Patrick Sarsfield arrived after negotiating the Treaty of Limerick, which was quite relevant to our Limerick group! He is buried in Luy, Belgium.

Through my contacts in Brussels I was able to organise a meet & greet with the Operations Manager, Christina Geary. She brought us on a tour, was excellent with our students and gave me her card for contact in the future. It’s not a college anymore she said, nowadays it’s an institute which caters for many groups such as businesses, schools & politicians. Apparently a significant amount of the secret peace talks re The Good Friday Agreement happened there, which was very interesting to our students. Accommodation & food is available there for the visiting groups.

Irish Transition Year groups stay there, business & political party think-ins are organised there. There was a group from Deloitte in residence today for a think-in.
